Sildenafil — the generic form of Viagra® — is a prescription medication used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. It belongs to a class of drugs called PDE5 inhibitors, which work by relaxing smooth muscle and increasing blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation. It does not cause an erection on its own — arousal is still required — but it makes the body's natural response significantly more reliable. How long before sex should I take sildenafil?

Take sildenafil 30–60 minutes before sexual activity for best results. Effects typically last 4–6 hours. A high-fat meal before taking it can slow absorption and delay onset — taking it on an empty stomach produces the fastest effect.

Does sildenafil work automatically without arousal?

No. Sildenafil enhances the body's natural response to sexual stimulation — it doesn't cause an erection on its own. Physical and mental arousal are still required for the medication to work.

Can I take sildenafil daily?

Daily low-dose sildenafil is sometimes prescribed for pulmonary arterial hypertension, but for erectile dysfunction it's generally taken as needed. Daily dosing for ED is less common than with tadalafil (Cialis).

What side effects might I experience?

Headache, facial flushing, nasal congestion, indigestion, and visual disturbances — including a blue tinge to vision — are the most commonly reported effects. These are typically mild and brief. Serious side effects require immediate medical attention.

Can I take sildenafil with nitrate medications?

Absolutely not. Combining sildenafil with any nitrate medication — including nitroglycerin, isosorbide mononitrate, and amyl nitrite — can cause a severe and potentially fatal drop in blood pressure. This combination is contraindicated.
