What is Seroquel (Quetiapine)?

Seroquel is an atypical antipsychotic medication used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and as an add-on treatment for major depressive disorder. It works by modulating several neurotransmitter systems in the brain—including dopamine and serotonin—to reduce psychotic symptoms, stabilize mood, and improve overall functioning. At lower doses, it's sometimes prescribed off-label for insomnia due to its sedating properties. It's taken orally once or twice daily, with dosing depending on the condition being treated.

Dopamine and serotonin modulation

Blocks specific dopamine and serotonin receptors in the brain, reducing the overactive signaling that drives hallucinations, delusions, and mood instability in psychotic and bipolar disorders.

Mood stabilization

Helps regulate the extreme highs and lows of bipolar disorder by acting on multiple receptor systems simultaneously—providing more comprehensive mood control than single-receptor medications.

Sedating properties

Quetiapine's antihistamine activity contributes to its calming and sleep-promoting effects, which is why lower doses are sometimes used for sleep difficulties, though this is an off-label use.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long before Seroquel starts working?

For acute mania or psychosis, some improvement may be noticed within the first week. For depression or ongoing mood stabilization, full benefit typically takes 4–6 weeks of consistent use.

Will Seroquel make me gain weight?

Weight gain is a common concern with quetiapine — it affects a meaningful portion of people, particularly at higher doses. Monitoring weight regularly and discussing any changes with your clinician is important.

Is Seroquel habit-forming?

Seroquel is not classified as a controlled substance and does not cause dependence in the traditional sense. However, stopping it abruptly can cause withdrawal-like symptoms — always taper under clinician guidance.

What side effects might I experience?

Drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, constipation, and weight gain are most common. Metabolic effects including elevated blood sugar and lipids can occur with long-term use and are monitored periodically.

Can Seroquel be used for sleep?

It is sometimes prescribed off-label for insomnia at low doses due to its sedating properties. However, this is an off-label use and not without risks — discuss the appropriateness with your clinician.
