What is Saxenda®?

Saxenda® is an FDA-approved liraglutide injection specifically designed for chronic weight management—not for type 2 diabetes.

What makes Saxenda® distinct is its established track record. While weekly injections like Wegovy® and Zepbound® are relatively new to the market, Saxenda® has been prescribed to millions of patients since 2015, providing clinicians with extensive data on long-term outcomes, side effect management, and patient success patterns. It's also the only GLP-1 approved for adolescents aged 12-17 with obesity.

Taken once daily, Saxenda® works by mimicking the GLP-1 hormone to reduce appetite, slow gastric emptying, and support sustainable weight loss. Most patients start at a lower dose and gradually increase over five weeks to reach the maintenance dose of 3 mg daily.

Reduces appetite and increases feelings of fullness

by activating GLP-1 receptors in areas of the brain that regulate hunger and satiety—helping you eat less without feeling deprived or fighting constant cravings.

Slows gastric emptying

to keep food in your stomach longer, preventing post-meal blood sugar spikes and creating a sustained sense of fullness that makes it easier to maintain a reduced-calorie diet.

Supports sustainable, gradual weight loss

with daily dosing that allows for steady, consistent appetite suppression rather than the once-weekly fluctuations some patients experience with longer-acting GLP-1s.

Improves metabolic health markers

including blood pressure, cholesterol, and glycemic control—benefits that extend beyond the number on the scale to overall cardiometabolic wellness.

How Saxenda® can change your day-to-day

Consistent appetite control every day

Many patients describe the daily injection as creating steady, predictable appetite suppression—no wondering if "today is the day" you feel the effects, as can happen with weekly injections.

Freedom from food obsession

The reduction in "food noise"—intrusive thoughts about eating, constant meal planning, preoccupation with the next snack—creates mental space that wasn't there before.

A routine that becomes second nature

Once-daily injections fit naturally into morning or evening routines, much like brushing your teeth—simple, quick, and soon forgotten as just part of your day.

Clinical outcomes and care10%
Patients treated with Saxenda® achieved at least 5% weight loss significantly more often than those on placebo, with many patients achieving 10% or greater weight reduction by week 56.

In patients without diabetes, average weight loss with Saxenda® was approximately 4.5% more than placebo.

Beyond weight loss, patients experienced improvements in cardiometabolic risk factors including reductions in systolic blood pressure, improvements in lipid profiles, and better glycemic control—even in patients without diabetes.

Frequently asked questions about Saxenda®

How is Saxenda® different from Wegovy® or other GLP-1 medications?

Saxenda® and Wegovy® are both FDA-approved for weight management, but they contain different active ingredients and have different dosing schedules. Saxenda® contains liraglutide and is taken once daily, while Wegovy® contains semaglutide and is taken once weekly. Saxenda® has been FDA-approved since 2014—over a decade of real-world experience—while Wegovy® was approved in 2021. Saxenda® also has the longest track record in adolescents aged 12-17 with obesity. Some patients prefer the consistency of daily dosing, while others prefer the convenience of weekly injections. Your General Medicine clinician can help you decide which is right for you.

How long does it take to work?

Most patients notice appetite changes within the first few weeks. Meaningful weight loss typically becomes visible by 8-16 weeks, with results continuing to build over time. The SCALE clinical trials evaluated patients at 56 weeks of treatment. You should evaluate your progress at 16 weeks—if you haven't lost at least 4% of your baseline body weight, you and your clinician should discuss whether to continue treatment.

Can I switch from Saxenda® to a different GLP-1 later?

Yes, but it should be done under clinician guidance. Your General Medicine clinician can help you transition between GLP-1 formulations based on your goals, tolerance, and how well you're responding to treatment. Keep in mind that switching requires adjusting to a new dosing schedule and potentially different side effects.

Is Saxenda® safe long-term?

Saxenda® has been studied in clinical trials up to 3 years (the SCALE Obesity and Prediabetes trial) with a well-characterized safety profile. It's been prescribed to millions of patients since 2015, providing extensive real-world safety data. Long-term use should always be supervised by a clinician who can monitor your health and adjust treatment as needed.

Will insurance cover Saxenda®?

Insurance coverage varies significantly by plan. Saxenda® is rarely covered by commercial insurance for weight loss alone, and Medicare Part D generally does not cover it. Some Medicaid programs may cover it with prior authorization in specific states. When covered, eligible commercially insured patients previously could access savings cards (though availability has been discontinued as of recent updates—check NovoCare for current programs). Self-pay pricing is approximately $1,350-$1,800 per month without discounts. Discount cards from GoodRx or SingleCare may reduce costs. Our team can help you navigate your options.

What are the side effects?

The most common side effects of Saxenda® include nausea, diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, decreased appetite, headache, and fatigue. These are typically mild to moderate and occur most often during dose escalation. More serious but less common risks include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, kidney problems, changes in heart rate, low blood sugar (if used with other diabetes medications), and depression or suicidal thoughts. Saxenda® should not be used in patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). Injection site reactions can occur but are generally mild.
