What is Rogaine (Rx Strength Minoxidil)?

Prescription-strength Rogaine contains minoxidil at a higher concentration than what's available over the counter, used to treat androgenetic alopecia—the most common form of hair loss in both men and women. Minoxidil works by widening blood vessels around hair follicles, increasing the delivery of oxygen and nutrients that follicles need to sustain the hair growth cycle. It doesn't address the hormonal root cause of hair loss but can meaningfully slow shedding and stimulate regrowth with consistent use. It's applied topically to the scalp once or twice daily.

Vasodilation at the follicle

Minoxidil is a potassium channel opener that dilates blood vessels around hair follicles, improving circulation and nutrient delivery to follicles that have begun to miniaturize and shed.

Growth phase extension

Stimulates follicles to enter and sustain the active growth (anagen) phase of the hair cycle longer, increasing the density and thickness of existing hair over time.

Higher-concentration advantage

Prescription-strength formulations provide greater potency than OTC options—particularly beneficial for patients with more significant hair loss or those who didn't achieve satisfactory results with standard-strength products.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long before I see results from prescription Rogaine?

Hair regrowth is slow. Most people begin noticing results after 3–6 months of consistent twice-daily use. Visible improvement in density and coverage continues building over 12 months or more.

Is prescription Rogaine stronger than OTC Rogaine?

Yes. Prescription-strength Rogaine contains 5% minoxidil — the same concentration as men's OTC Rogaine but higher than the standard women's OTC version. This higher concentration may produce more significant results.

Do I have to use it forever to keep results?

Yes. Hair loss typically returns within 3–6 months of stopping Rogaine. It's a maintenance treatment — the benefit requires continued use. Stopping is not harmful, but the regrowth will gradually reverse.

What side effects might I experience?

Scalp irritation, dryness, itching, and flaking are most common with topical use. Some people notice temporary increased shedding in the first 2–6 weeks — this often precedes regrowth and is not a sign of failure.

Can women use prescription-strength Rogaine?

Yes. Prescription-strength minoxidil can be prescribed for women with androgenetic alopecia, particularly when OTC 2% concentrations haven't provided sufficient results. Dosing may differ from men's standard regimens.
