What is Rizatriptan?

Rizatriptan is a triptan medication taken at the onset of a migraine to stop the attack in progress. It works by activating serotonin receptors in the brain that narrow dilated blood vessels and block the pain signals and inflammatory neuropeptides responsible for migraine symptoms. Rizatriptan is available as a standard tablet and as an orally disintegrating tablet (Maxalt-MLT) that dissolves on the tongue without water—useful when nausea makes swallowing difficult. It's most effective when taken early in the migraine and is not intended for preventive use.

Serotonin 5-HT1B/1D agonism

Activates serotonin receptors on cranial blood vessels and trigeminal nerve terminals, causing vasoconstriction and blocking the release of inflammatory neuropeptides—interrupting the neurovascular cascade that drives migraine pain.

Fast-dissolving tablet option

The Maxalt-MLT orally disintegrating formulation dissolves on the tongue in seconds without water, making it practical when migraine-associated nausea makes swallowing a standard tablet difficult or unreliable.
