Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I have restless leg syndrome?

RLS is diagnosed by four core criteria: an urge to move the legs (usually accompanied by uncomfortable sensations), symptoms that worsen at rest, partial or complete relief with movement, and symptoms that are worse in the evening or at night. A clinical evaluation confirms the diagnosis.

Can RLS be caused by something treatable?

Yes — iron deficiency is one of the most important and reversible causes of RLS. Kidney disease, pregnancy, and certain medications (antidepressants, antihistamines, antinausea drugs) can also trigger or worsen symptoms. A clinical workup always includes iron studies.

Is RLS a lifelong condition?

Primary RLS tends to be chronic and progressive, though symptom severity fluctuates. Secondary RLS — caused by iron deficiency or pregnancy — may resolve when the underlying condition is treated. For primary RLS, management focuses on long-term symptom control.

What lifestyle changes help with RLS?

Reducing caffeine and alcohol, establishing consistent sleep and wake times, moderate exercise (but not close to bedtime), and warm baths or leg massages before bed may provide symptomatic relief — particularly for milder cases.

What side effects are associated with RLS treatments?

Iron supplementation may cause constipation and GI upset. Dopamine agonists (pramipexole, ropinirole) can cause nausea, sleepiness, and — importantly — augmentation (worsening of symptoms over time). Gabapentinoids may cause dizziness and sedation, particularly at higher doses. Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) visit What to expect from a Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) visit
