What is Rescula (unoprostone) Eye Drops?

Rescula is a prescription eye drop used to lower intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension—conditions where elevated pressure inside the eye can damage the optic nerve and lead to vision loss over time. Unoprostone is a docosanoid compound that works by increasing the outflow of aqueous humor from the eye, reducing the pressure that builds when fluid can't drain properly. It's applied twice daily and is typically used when other IOP-lowering medications haven't been sufficient on their own.

Aqueous humor outflow enhancement

Increases drainage of the fluid inside the eye through the uveoscleral and trabecular outflow pathways, reducing the intraocular pressure that can damage the optic nerve in glaucoma.

Docosanoid mechanism

Works through a different receptor pathway than prostaglandin analogs like latanoprost, giving it a distinct mechanism that can complement other IOP-lowering medications in patients who need additional pressure control.

Optic nerve pressure protection

By consistently lowering IOP, Rescula helps reduce the mechanical stress on the optic nerve that leads to progressive vision loss—the primary treatment goal in open-angle glaucoma management.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Rescula used for?

Rescula eye drops are used to lower intraocular pressure in people with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension — protecting the optic nerve from the pressure-related damage that leads to gradual vision loss.

How is Rescula different from other glaucoma drops like latanoprost?

Rescula works through a docosanoid pathway distinct from prostaglandin analogs like latanoprost or bimatoprost. This different mechanism makes it a useful add-on option when existing drops aren't providing enough pressure control.

How many times a day do I need to use Rescula?

Rescula is applied twice daily — morning and evening — to the affected eye(s). Consistent twice-daily dosing is important to maintain steady intraocular pressure reduction throughout the day.

What side effects might I experience?

Temporary stinging or burning after application, itching, redness, and dry eyes are most commonly reported. Eye color changes and eyelash growth changes — associated with some other glaucoma drops — are not characteristic of Rescula.

Can I use Rescula with other glaucoma eye drops?

Yes. Rescula is often used as an add-on when a single drop doesn't provide adequate pressure control. If using multiple eye drops, wait at least 5–10 minutes between applications to prevent dilution and washout.
