What is Relpax (eletriptan)?

Relpax is a second-generation triptan medication taken at the onset of a migraine to stop the attack. It works by activating serotonin 5-HT1B and 5-HT1D receptors, causing constriction of dilated cranial blood vessels and blocking the release of inflammatory neuropeptides from trigeminal nerve endings that drive migraine pain. Compared to first-generation triptans, Eletriptan has a higher receptor affinity and better oral bioavailability, which may translate to faster and more reliable relief for some patients. It's taken as a single tablet and a second dose can be taken if the migraine returns after initial relief.

High-affinity serotonin receptor activation

Binds with greater affinity to 5-HT1B and 5-HT1D receptors than older triptans, producing potent cranial vasoconstriction and blocking the trigeminal inflammatory cascade that sustains migraine pain.

Improved oral bioavailability

Eletriptan's pharmacokinetic profile—with higher oral bioavailability than sumatriptan—results in more consistent drug absorption and potentially more reliable migraine relief across different patients and migraine types.

Second-dose option

If the migraine returns after initial relief, a second dose can be taken 2 hours after the first—providing a practical option for migraines that initially respond but subsequently recur within the same attack.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly does Relpax work for migraines?

Most people experience meaningful pain relief within 2 hours of taking Relpax. It's most effective when taken at the very first sign of a migraine — waiting until pain is severe significantly reduces its effectiveness.

How is Relpax different from first-generation triptans like sumatriptan?

Eletriptan has higher receptor affinity and better oral bioavailability than sumatriptan, which may translate to more consistent and reliable migraine relief — particularly for patients who've had unpredictable response to older triptans.

Can I take a second dose if my migraine returns?

Yes. If the migraine returns after initial relief, a second dose can be taken at least 2 hours after the first. No more than two doses should be used within any 24-hour period.

What side effects might I experience?

Dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, tingling, and a sensation of chest pressure or tightness are most common — typical of the triptan class. These are usually mild and brief. Serious chest symptoms require immediate medical evaluation.

Is Relpax safe with CYP3A4 inhibitors?

Relpax is metabolized by CYP3A4. Potent inhibitors of this enzyme — including certain antifungals, macrolide antibiotics, and HIV medications — can significantly increase eletriptan levels and should not be taken within 72 hours of Relpax.
