What is Qelbree (Viloxazine)?

Qelbree is a non-stimulant prescription medication approved for ADHD in children aged 6 and older and in adults. It works by selectively inhibiting norepinephrine reuptake in the brain while also modulating serotonin activity—a mechanism that supports attention, impulse control, and executive function through pathways distinct from stimulant medications. As a non-controlled substance, it's an important option for patients who can't use stimulants or for whom stimulants haven't worked well. It's taken once daily and extended-release capsules can be swallowed whole or opened and sprinkled on food.

Norepinephrine reuptake inhibition

Blocks the norepinephrine transporter in prefrontal brain circuits, increasing norepinephrine availability in regions responsible for attention regulation, working memory, and impulse control.

Serotonin modulation

Unlike Strattera, Viloxazine also interacts with serotonin receptors—a pharmacological distinction that may contribute to its efficacy profile and potentially to its tolerability in certain patients.

Non-stimulant, non-scheduled option

Not a controlled substance, making it accessible for patients with substance use concerns, those in environments where stimulant prescribing is restricted, or anyone seeking an effective non-stimulant ADHD treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Qelbree different from Strattera for ADHD?

Both are non-stimulant ADHD medications, but Qelbree acts on both norepinephrine reuptake and serotonin receptors — a slightly different pharmacological profile than Strattera. Some patients respond better to one than the other.

How long before Qelbree starts working?

Meaningful ADHD symptom improvement — in attention, impulse control, and hyperactivity — typically develops over 4–6 weeks of consistent daily dosing, similar to other non-stimulant ADHD medications.

Can Qelbree be sprinkled on food?

Yes. The extended-release capsule can be opened and the contents sprinkled on a teaspoon of soft food like applesauce. Do not chew the granules — swallow the mixture immediately and do not store for later use.

What side effects might I experience?

Decreased appetite, somnolence, fatigue, nausea, and irritability are most commonly reported. Like other ADHD medications, Qelbree carries a warning about increased suicidal thinking in children and adolescents — close monitoring is needed when starting.

Is Qelbree approved for adults with ADHD?

Yes — Qelbree received FDA approval for adult ADHD in addition to children and adolescents, making it one of the few non-stimulant medications with a full adult indication.
