What is Provera (Medroxyprogesterone)?

Provera is a synthetic progestin used to treat a range of hormonal conditions including abnormal uterine bleeding, secondary amenorrhea (absent periods), and endometriosis. It's also used alongside estrogen therapy in postmenopausal women to protect the uterine lining from overgrowth. Medroxyprogesterone mimics the natural progesterone your body produces, helping regulate the menstrual cycle and maintain the health of the uterine lining. Depending on the condition being treated, it may be taken continuously or cyclically for a set number of days each month.

Progestogenic uterine regulation

Mimics natural progesterone to stabilize and regulate the uterine lining—preventing the unchecked endometrial growth that causes irregular or heavy bleeding and protecting against uterine hyperplasia.

Cycle restoration

For women with absent or irregular periods due to hormonal imbalance, Provera can be used to trigger a withdrawal bleed, effectively resetting the menstrual cycle and confirming hormonal responsiveness.

Hormone therapy balance

When used alongside estrogen in menopausal hormone therapy, Medroxyprogesterone counteracts estrogen's stimulating effect on the uterine lining, significantly reducing the risk of endometrial cancer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What conditions is Provera used for?

Provera is prescribed for absent or irregular periods, abnormal uterine bleeding, endometriosis, and to protect the uterine lining when estrogen therapy is used after menopause. The dose and schedule depend on the indication.

How long before Provera brings on a period?

When used to trigger a withdrawal bleed in women with absent periods, Provera is typically taken for 5–10 days. Bleeding usually occurs within a few days of completing the course.

Can I take Provera during pregnancy?

No. Provera is contraindicated during pregnancy. If there is any possibility of pregnancy before starting Provera, a pregnancy test should be completed first. Inform your clinician immediately if pregnancy is suspected.

What side effects might I experience?

Headache, breast tenderness, bloating, mood changes, and irregular spotting are among the most commonly reported side effects. Weight changes and depressed mood can also occur in some people.

Is Provera the same as Depo-Provera?

No. Provera is an oral tablet taken daily for short courses. Depo-Provera is an injectable contraceptive given every three months. They contain the same active ingredient (medroxyprogesterone) but differ significantly in formulation, dose, and purpose.
