What is Prinivil (Lisinopril)?

Prinivil is an ACE inhibitor used to treat high blood pressure, heart failure, and to protect the kidneys in people with diabetes. It works by blocking an enzyme that causes blood vessels to tighten, allowing them to relax and reducing the effort your heart has to exert with each beat. It's one of the most widely prescribed blood pressure medications because of its strong safety record and broad range of benefits beyond blood pressure alone. Taken once daily, it works continuously to keep cardiovascular strain in check.

ACE inhibition

Blocks angiotensin-converting enzyme, preventing the production of a hormone that constricts blood vessels—resulting in lower blood pressure and reduced strain on the heart.

Heart and kidney protection

Beyond blood pressure control, Lisinopril helps protect the heart after a heart attack and slows kidney damage progression in people with diabetes-related kidney disease.

Once-daily convenience

A single daily dose maintains consistent blood pressure control around the clock, with a well-established safety profile built over decades of widespread clinical use.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take for lisinopril to lower my blood pressure?

Blood pressure typically begins to drop within hours of the first dose, but the full effect at a given dose may take 1–2 weeks. Your clinician may adjust the dose gradually to reach your target.

Why am I getting a dry cough?

A persistent dry cough affects up to 20% of people on ACE inhibitors including lisinopril. If it's bothersome, your clinician may switch you to an ARB, which provides similar benefits without this side effect.

Can I take lisinopril during pregnancy?

No. Lisinopril is contraindicated during pregnancy and can cause serious fetal harm. If you become pregnant while taking it, contact your clinician immediately to discuss safe alternatives.

What side effects might I experience?

Beyond dry cough, dizziness when standing up quickly is common early on. Elevated potassium can occur with long-term use. Rarely, a serious swelling reaction called angioedema may develop — seek immediate care.

Do I need to monitor my kidneys while on lisinopril?

Yes. Kidney function and potassium levels are checked periodically, especially when starting, after dose changes, or if you take other medications that also affect kidney function.
