What is Prilosec?

Prilosec is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that significantly reduces the amount of acid the stomach produces. It's used to treat GERD, erosive esophagitis, stomach ulcers, H. pylori infection (as part of combination therapy), and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. By dramatically lowering acid output, it allows the esophagus and stomach lining to heal from acid-related damage and relieves chronic heartburn and reflux symptoms. It's taken once daily before a meal and is one of the most widely prescribed medications in the world due to its efficacy and broad applicability.

Irreversible proton pump inhibition

Covalently binds to and permanently inactivates the H+/K+-ATPase enzyme (the stomach's acid pump) in parietal cells, reducing acid secretion more completely and durably than H2 blockers or antacids.
