What is PreviDent?

PreviDent is a prescription-strength fluoride toothpaste containing significantly more fluoride than over-the-counter options—designed to actively protect teeth that are at high risk for cavities. It's prescribed for patients with conditions that increase cavity risk, such as dry mouth, a history of frequent cavities, orthodontic appliances, or certain medical treatments. Rather than just cleaning teeth, PreviDent works to actively remineralize enamel and block the bacterial processes that cause decay. It's used like regular toothpaste, typically once daily at bedtime in place of your regular product.

High-dose fluoride remineralization

At prescription strength (5000 ppm fluoride), PreviDent actively reverses early enamel demineralization—restoring mineral density to weakened areas before they progress into full cavities.

Bacterial acid suppression

Fluoride ions interfere with the metabolism of cavity-causing bacteria, reducing the amount of acid they produce after eating—slowing the decay process at its source.

Targeted high-risk protection

Formulated for patients with elevated cavity risk—including dry mouth, radiation therapy patients, and those with braces or receding gums—where standard fluoride toothpaste simply isn't sufficient.

Why do I need prescription fluoride if I already use regular toothpaste?

Prescription PreviDent contains significantly more fluoride than any OTC toothpaste. For people at high cavity risk — due to dry mouth, radiation, or other factors — standard fluoride simply isn't enough protection.

How do I use it?

Use PreviDent once daily at bedtime in place of your regular toothpaste. Brush for 2 minutes, spit, and do not rinse, eat, or drink for at least 30 minutes after use to maximize fluoride contact with enamel.

Is it safe to swallow?

PreviDent should not be swallowed. The high fluoride content makes it appropriate for topical use only. This is especially important for children — it should be used under adult supervision.

What side effects might I experience?

PreviDent is applied topically and minimal fluoride enters the bloodstream. Occasional mild gum irritation or tooth sensitivity can occur. These are generally mild and not a reason to discontinue use.

Can children use PreviDent?

PreviDent can be prescribed for children, but requires careful supervision to ensure they spit rather than swallow. Dosing and supervision guidance will be provided by your clinician or dentist.
