Port / central line placement or removal

If a port or central line has been recommended for your treatment, a specialist can walk you through what's next. A General Medicine clinician reviews your history and builds a referral request, so your in-person visit starts without delay. If something's missing, we handle it before you go.

We share your health history ahead of time. And if anything comes up before or after your visit, we're a text away.

4

Get ongoing support anytime

Medications, labs, follow-ups, and referrals — we can coordinate it all. And because your history moves with you, you're never starting from scratch.

All your care in one place. That’s the General Medicine difference.

We help you understand your options, connect you to the right clinicians, manage prescriptions, coordinate any needed evaluations, and keep an eye on your overall health along the way. It’s comprehensive care that looks at the full picture — your goals, your history, your lifestyle — and makes it simple to move forward with confidence.

What to know before your port / central line placement and removal

If you've already had a treatment plan that calls for this kind of access, we'll make sure your specialist has it before your visit, so they can walk you through what it means right away. If you haven't had that plan yet, your specialist can evaluate you at this visit and help you figure out the right next step.

A port or central line is a small device placed under the skin, or a line placed in a vein, to make it easier to draw blood or give treatments like chemotherapy — done under local anesthesia

Most people go home the same day, with instructions for keeping the site clean while it heals

Your specialist will also go over risks, alternatives, and answer your questions before anything is decided

What our customers say about in-person visits

Hear from people who've had General Medicine match them with the right specialist — and stay in their corner every step of the way.

I had low testosterone all the way around so I wanted a referral so I could get properly tested. I'm now getting what I need and leaving my primary care doc in the weeds.

Geoff

General Medicine reached out to a local neurologist for me and got me an in-person appointment for the same week. My PCP through General Medicine continued to reach out to me to follow up, and I felt very supported the entire time.

Cait

They always treat me with respect and do their best to get me treated quickly. They arrange for all tests and doctor visits when they refer you to specialists. Plus, they take my Medicaid insurance!

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral to book?

Whether virtual or in person, you never need a referral before booking a visit with General Medicine. For in-person visits, we reach out to specialists near you to schedule your appointment. Tell us who you'd prefer, or let us choose for you — either way, we confirm they're in-network before booking. If that specialist requires a referral, our clinical team reviews your health history and symptoms, and if it all lines up, creates a referral for you before we book. That referral is yours to keep, whether we book for you or you take it somewhere else.

How does pricing work?

Before checkout, you'll see an estimated cash and insurance price based on your specialist and plan, but you won't pay until your visit — and that amount may shift with your care needs. All you pay today is $45. $15 covers a General Medicine clinician reviewing your info and providing a referral. $30 covers scheduling coordination: confirming the specialist's in-network, booking a time that works for you, and sending your history ahead. These fees aren't covered by insurance, but are FSA/HSA eligible.

Does this visit include the actual procedure?

This visit gets you seen and evaluated by a specialist who can perform placement. Some procedures happen the same day. Others are scheduled separately based on what you and your specialist decide.

How long does the port or line stay in?

As long as your treatment requires — it's removed once it's no longer needed.

What if I need a different type of access than expected?

Your specialist confirms the right option — port, PICC line, or central line — based on your treatment plan before placing it.
