What is Phexxi?

Phexxi is a prescription non-hormonal vaginal contraceptive gel applied immediately before sex to prevent pregnancy. It works by maintaining the natural acidic pH of the vagina—which typically rises during sex due to the alkalinity of semen—creating an environment that immobilizes and kills sperm before they can reach and fertilize an egg. It contains a combination of lactic acid, citric acid, and potassium bitartrate that acts as a buffering system to maintain vaginal acidity. Used as directed (one applicator inserted up to one hour before each act of intercourse), it's about 86% effective with typical use.

The acidic buffering agents in Phexxi prevent semen from raising vaginal pH to the alkaline level that sperm require for motility and survival—maintaining an acidic environment that is hostile to sperm function.

Sperm immobilization

By keeping vaginal pH low during and after sex, Phexxi impairs sperm motility and reduces their ability to navigate through the reproductive tract to reach an egg—providing contraceptive effect through a physiological mechanism.
