Frequently Asked Questions

What is pelvic physical therapy?

Pelvic PT involves specialized assessment and treatment of the pelvic floor muscles — which support the bladder, bowel, and uterus and play a role in sexual function. Therapists evaluate muscle strength, coordination, tension, and movement patterns using internal and external techniques.

Who benefits from pelvic physical therapy?

Pelvic PT is beneficial for urinary incontinence, urinary urgency and frequency, pelvic organ prolapse, painful intercourse (dyspareunia), vaginismus, postpartum pelvic floor recovery, chronic pelvic pain, interstitial cystitis, constipation with pelvic floor dysfunction, and pre- or post-prostatectomy incontinence in men.

What should I expect at a pelvic PT appointment?

The initial assessment involves a detailed history and physical evaluation — which may include an internal pelvic floor examination to assess muscle function. You'll discuss your goals and concerns beforehand. Internal assessment is always with explicit consent — external-only assessment is an option if preferred.

How many sessions will I need?

Most conditions require 6–12 sessions, with significant improvement often seen within the first 4–6 weeks. Home exercise programs between sessions are an important part of the process. Duration depends on condition severity, chronicity, and adherence to the home program.

Are there any side effects or risks associated with pelvic physical therapy?

Pelvic PT is very safe when performed by a trained specialist. Mild soreness after internal assessment or treatment is common and typically resolves within 24 hours. There are no significant medical risks. Some patients experience temporary symptom fluctuation early in treatment before consistent improvement occurs.
