What is Paroxetine (Paxil)?

Paroxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) prescribed for depression, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, OCD, PTSD, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. It's one of the broadest-indication SSRIs available and also carries FDA approval for hot flashes in menopausal women under the brand Brisdelle. Paroxetine increases serotonin availability in the brain to stabilize mood and reduce anxiety. It's taken once daily and requires 4–6 weeks to reach full therapeutic effect. Doses should be tapered gradually when discontinuing to avoid withdrawal symptoms.

Serotonin reuptake inhibition

Blocks the serotonin transporter, increasing serotonin availability in the synaptic space to regulate mood, reduce anxiety, and improve emotional resilience across a wide range of psychiatric conditions.

Broad multi-indication approval

Approved for more conditions than most SSRIs—including depression, OCD, PTSD, social anxiety, panic disorder, GAD, PMDD, and menopausal hot flashes—making it a versatile option across overlapping or comorbid presentations.

Discontinuation taper required

Paroxetine has a shorter half-life than some other SSRIs, making gradual dose tapering important when stopping—abrupt discontinuation can cause dizziness, irritability, and flu-like withdrawal symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions

What conditions is Paxil approved for?

Paxil is FDA-approved for major depression, OCD, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, PTSD, and PMDD — one of the broadest indication lists among SSRIs. It's also approved for menopausal hot flashes under the name Brisdelle.

How long before Paxil starts working?

Mood and anxiety improvements typically begin within 2–4 weeks, with full therapeutic benefit developing over 4–8 weeks of consistent daily use. Anxiety symptoms often respond before depression does.

Why is Paxil harder to stop than other SSRIs?

Paroxetine has a shorter half-life than most SSRIs and potently inhibits its own metabolism — making discontinuation syndrome more pronounced. Tapering very slowly is especially important with Paxil compared to other antidepressants.

What side effects might I experience?

Drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, sweating, sexual dysfunction, and weight gain are among the most commonly reported effects — more anticholinergic effects than most other SSRIs. These are often most pronounced when starting.

Is Paxil safe during pregnancy?

Paroxetine carries specific caution in pregnancy — it has been associated with an increased risk of cardiac defects when taken in the first trimester. The decision requires careful risk-benefit discussion with your clinician.
