Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I'm having a panic attack or a medical emergency?

Panic attacks produce intense physical symptoms — racing heart, chest tightness, shortness of breath, dizziness, and tingling — that peak within 10 minutes and resolve within 30. A first or atypical episode should be evaluated to rule out cardiac or other medical causes before attributing symptoms to panic disorder.

Do panic attacks mean I have panic disorder?

Not necessarily. Isolated panic attacks can occur in response to specific stressors. Panic disorder is diagnosed when attacks are recurrent, unexpected, and accompanied by persistent concern about future attacks or avoidance behaviors. The distinction guides whether treatment is needed and what type.

What is the most effective treatment for panic disorder?

Cognitive behavioral therapy — particularly exposure-based techniques — is the most evidence-supported treatment and produces durable results. SSRIs and SNRIs are the first-line medications. Benzodiazepines provide rapid relief but are not recommended as long-term treatment due to dependence risk.

Can lifestyle changes reduce panic attacks?

Reducing caffeine and alcohol, improving sleep, regular aerobic exercise, and stress management strategies can meaningfully reduce panic attack frequency. These support — but don't replace — clinical treatment for established panic disorder.

What side effects are associated with panic disorder treatments?

SSRIs may cause nausea, insomnia, and anxiety during the first weeks — which can temporarily worsen panic before improving it. Starting at a low dose minimizes this. Benzodiazepines cause sedation and carry dependency risk with regular use. CBT has no physical side effects. Panic Attacks visit What to expect from a Panic Attacks visit
