Osteoporosis screening

Bone density naturally declines with age, and a DEXA scan is the standard way to catch osteoporosis before a fracture happens. This visit determines whether screening makes sense for you, and gets you referred to have it done.

Frequently asked questions

Who should get screened for osteoporosis?

Guidelines generally recommend screening for women 65 and older, and earlier for those with specific risk factors — your clinician can help determine if that's you. Family history of fracture or certain medications can also lower the recommended screening age.

How is osteoporosis screening done?

A DEXA scan — a quick, low-radiation imaging test that measures bone density, usually taking about 10 to 20 minutes with no special preparation needed. This test is widely available and doesn't require any fasting or special dietary preparation.

Is the scan uncomfortable or risky?

It's non-invasive, painless, and involves very low radiation exposure — less than a standard chest X-ray — similar to other routine screening imaging. You simply lie still on a table while the machine takes images.

What happens if my results show low bone density?

Your clinician reviews your results and discusses next steps, which may include calcium and vitamin D supplements, weight-bearing exercise, or a bone-strengthening medication. Your clinician will also discuss steps to reduce fall risk if your bone density is significantly low.

What side effects are associated with osteoporosis treatments?

This depends on the specific medication, if one is needed — your clinician will review options based on your results. Your clinician will explain the specific considerations for whichever option fits your results.
