What is Ondansetron (Zofran)?

Ondansetron is a powerful anti-nausea medication prescribed to prevent and treat nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, and in some cases severe morning sickness during pregnancy. It works by blocking serotonin receptors in both the gut and the brain that trigger the vomiting reflex. Unlike older anti-nausea medications that tend to cause heavy sedation, Ondansetron is well-tolerated and allows most people to function normally while taking it. It's available as a tablet, orally dissolving tablet, or injectable form.

Serotonin (5-HT3) receptor blockade

Blocks 5-HT3 receptors in the gastrointestinal tract and the brain's vomiting center, preventing the serotonin surge that chemotherapy and other triggers use to initiate the nausea and vomiting response.

Minimal sedation

Unlike antihistamine or dopamine-blocking antiemetics, Ondansetron provides strong nausea control without the heavy sedation or cognitive impairment that makes many anti-nausea medications difficult to tolerate.

Versatile delivery

Available in multiple formats—including an orally dissolving tablet that works even when swallowing is difficult due to nausea—making it practical across a wide range of clinical situations.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly does Zofran work?

Ondansetron typically begins working within 30 minutes of an oral dose. The orally dissolving tablet may work slightly faster. IV ondansetron given in a clinical setting works within minutes.

Can I take Zofran for morning sickness during pregnancy?

Zofran is sometimes prescribed off-label for severe nausea and vomiting in pregnancy. The decision requires careful discussion with your clinician, weighing the benefits of managing severe nausea against available safety data.

Does Zofran make you drowsy?

Unlike older anti-nausea medications, ondansetron causes minimal sedation in most people, making it more practical for daytime use. Headache is actually more commonly reported than drowsiness.

What side effects might I experience?

Headache, constipation, and dizziness are the most common. At higher doses, QT interval prolongation — a heart rhythm consideration — can occur. Your clinician will account for this if you take other relevant medications.

Can children take Zofran?

Yes. Ondansetron is used in pediatric patients for chemotherapy-related and post-surgical nausea. Dosing is weight-based — your clinician will determine the appropriate dose for your child's age and weight.
