What is Omeprazole?

Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that significantly reduces the amount of acid the stomach produces. It's used to treat GERD, erosive esophagitis, stomach ulcers, H. pylori infection (as part of combination therapy), and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. By dramatically lowering acid output, it allows the esophagus and stomach lining to heal from acid-related damage and relieves chronic heartburn and reflux symptoms. It's taken once daily before a meal and is one of the most widely prescribed medications in the world due to its efficacy and broad applicability.

Covalently binds to and permanently inactivates the H+/K+-ATPase enzyme (the stomach's acid pump) in parietal cells, reducing acid secretion more completely and durably than H2 blockers or antacids.

Omeprazole typically begins reducing acid production within 1–4 days. For healing erosive esophagitis or GERD-related damage, full healing may take 4–8 weeks of consistent once-daily use.

Should I take Omeprazole before or after eating?

Take Omeprazole 30–60 minutes before your first meal. Omeprazole blocks acid pumps that are activated when you eat — taking it before food ensures the medication is working during the most acid-stimulating period.

Is it safe to take Omeprazole every day long-term?

Short-term use is well established as safe. Long-term daily use may affect magnesium levels, vitamin B12 absorption, and bone density over time. Your clinician will periodically reassess the need for continued use.

What side effects might I experience?

Headache, diarrhea, nausea, and stomach pain are most common and typically mild. Long-term use may occasionally affect magnesium or B12 levels — monitoring is appropriate with extended treatment.

Can I take Omeprazole with other medications?
