What is Ofloxacin?

Ofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections including urinary tract infections, pelvic inflammatory disease, sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhea and chlamydia, respiratory infections, and skin infections. It works by inhibiting the bacterial enzymes DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are essential for bacterial DNA replication and repair. Ofloxacin is well-absorbed orally and achieves high concentrations in urine, genital tissue, and the respiratory tract—making it effective for infections in these locations. It's taken once or twice daily depending on the condition being treated.

Dual topoisomerase inhibition

Blocks both DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV in bacteria, preventing DNA unwinding and repair—causing lethal double-strand DNA breaks and bacterial cell death in susceptible gram-positive and gram-negative organisms.

High tissue and urinary concentrations

Ofloxacin achieves high concentrations in the urinary tract, genitourinary tissues, and respiratory tract—the primary sites of the infections it's used to treat—ensuring effective antibacterial activity at the infection site.

Effective against the key pathogens responsible for gonorrhea, chlamydia, and community-acquired respiratory infections—making it a clinically versatile antibiotic for outpatient management of multiple infection types.
