What is Ocuflox (Ofloxacin)?

Ocuflox is a prescription antibiotic eye drop containing ofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections of the eye—including bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye) and corneal ulcers. It works by penetrating bacterial cells and disrupting the enzymes they need to replicate and repair their DNA, effectively stopping the infection. It's applied directly to the eye several times daily, with the frequency depending on whether it's being used for conjunctivitis or a more serious corneal infection.

DNA gyrase inhibition

Blocks bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV—enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication and repair—causing bacteria to accumulate fatal DNA damage and die off rapidly.

Broad antibacterial coverage

Effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria that commonly cause ocular infections, making it a reliable choice for both conjunctivitis and more serious corneal infections.

Direct ocular delivery

Applied as drops directly to the eye surface, Ocuflox achieves high local antibiotic concentrations exactly where the infection is—without the systemic exposure that comes with oral antibiotics.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly will my eye infection improve on Ocuflox?

Most bacterial eye infections begin improving within 1–2 days of starting Ocuflox. If symptoms aren't improving after 2–3 days or are getting worse, contact your clinician for reevaluation.

How many times a day do I need to use it?

Dosing depends on the condition. For bacterial conjunctivitis, it's typically applied every 2–4 hours for the first two days, then four times daily for up to 5 more days. Your clinician will specify your schedule.

Should I stop using it when my eye feels better?

No. Complete the full course even if your eye appears to have cleared. Stopping early can allow remaining bacteria to persist and lead to recurrence or antibiotic resistance.

What side effects might I experience?

Local stinging or burning immediately after application is common and usually brief. Redness, itching, and temporary blurred vision can also occur. These are generally mild and not a reason to stop treatment.

Can I wear contact lenses while using Ocuflox?

Avoid contact lens use during an active eye infection and while using antibiotic eye drops. Your clinician will advise when it is safe to resume wearing contacts after completing treatment.
