Frequently Asked Questions

What are the signs that I might have sleep apnea?

Loud snoring, witnessed breathing pauses during sleep, gasping or choking at night, waking unrefreshed, excessive daytime sleepiness, and morning headaches are the most common indicators. A bed partner's observations are often one of the first clues.

Do I need an in-lab sleep study or can I do a home test?

Home sleep apnea testing is appropriate for most adults with a high clinical suspicion of moderate-to-severe OSA without major comorbidities. In-lab polysomnography is recommended when home testing is inconclusive or when other sleep disorders are suspected alongside OSA.

Is CPAP the only treatment option?

CPAP is the most effective first-line treatment, but alternatives exist. Oral appliances are appropriate for mild to moderate OSA or CPAP intolerance. Positional therapy helps when OSA is position-dependent. New pharmacological options are now available for select patients.

What happens if sleep apnea goes untreated?

Untreated OSA is associated with significantly elevated risk of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and mood disorders. Daytime cognitive impairment and drowsy driving risk are also important consequences of unmanaged OSA.

What side effects are associated with OSA treatments?

CPAP can cause nasal dryness, congestion, mask discomfort, and aerophagia (air swallowing). These are typically addressable with equipment adjustments. Oral appliances may cause temporary jaw soreness and dental changes with long-term use. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) visit What to expect from a Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) visit
