What is Nurtec?

Nurtec (rimegepant) is an oral CGRP receptor antagonist — a newer class of migraine medication that works differently from traditional triptans. It's FDA-approved both to treat migraine attacks as they start and to prevent episodic migraines when taken every other day. By blocking CGRP, a protein heavily involved in triggering migraine pain and inflammation, Nurtec can reduce the severity and duration of attacks and, over time, reduce how often they happen. It comes as a small orally dissolving tablet — no water needed.

CGRP receptor blockade

Rimegepant blocks the receptor for CGRP, a key molecule that drives migraine pain signaling, inflammation, and hypersensitivity to light and sound.

Acute and preventive action

Unlike most migraine medications that only treat attacks, Nurtec is clinically proven to both stop migraines in progress and reduce future attack frequency.

Fast-dissolving format

The orally dissolving tablet works even when nausea makes swallowing difficult — a meaningful advantage during active migraine attacks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Nurtec both treat and prevent migraines?

Yes — Nurtec is uniquely FDA-approved for both acute migraine treatment (taken when an attack starts) and episodic migraine prevention (taken every other day). No other CGRP-targeting medication has both approvals simultaneously.

How quickly does Nurtec work for an acute migraine?

Many people experience meaningful pain relief within 2 hours of taking Nurtec. As with all acute migraine treatments, it works best when taken at the first sign of an attack rather than waiting until pain is severe.

Do I need water to take the Nurtec tablet?

No. Nurtec is an orally dissolving tablet (ODT) that dissolves on the tongue without water — a significant advantage when nausea makes swallowing difficult during a migraine attack.

What side effects might I experience?

Nausea is the most commonly reported side effect. Nurtec is generally very well tolerated — notably, it does not cause the vasoconstriction-related chest tightness or pressure that can occur with triptans.

Can I take Nurtec if I have cardiovascular disease and can't use triptans?

Yes. Nurtec works by blocking CGRP receptors rather than constricting blood vessels, making it an appropriate option for people who cannot take triptans due to cardiovascular contraindications.
