What is Norvasc (Amlodipine)?

Norvasc is a calcium channel blocker prescribed to treat high blood pressure and chest pain (angina). It works by blocking calcium from entering the smooth muscle cells of blood vessel walls, causing them to relax and widen—reducing blood pressure and decreasing the workload on the heart. For angina, it also relaxes the coronary arteries, improving blood flow to the heart muscle. Amlodipine is taken once daily and has a long half-life that provides smooth, consistent blood pressure control throughout the 24-hour dosing interval without significant peaks or troughs.

Calcium channel blockade

Blocks L-type calcium channels in vascular smooth muscle cells, preventing calcium-driven contraction and causing blood vessels to relax and dilate—reducing peripheral vascular resistance and lowering blood pressure.

Angina relief through coronary vasodilation

Relaxes and widens the coronary arteries, improving oxygen delivery to the heart muscle and reducing the frequency and severity of angina episodes—both at rest and during physical activity.

Long-acting once-daily control

Amlodipine's 30–50 hour half-life provides exceptionally smooth, sustained blood pressure reduction across the full dosing interval—minimizing the blood pressure fluctuations that shorter-acting calcium channel blockers can produce.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long before Norvasc lowers my blood pressure?

Blood pressure reduction typically begins within 24–48 hours of the first dose. Full effect at a given dose develops over 7–14 days as amlodipine accumulates to steady-state levels — its long half-life produces gradual, smooth action.

Why does amlodipine cause ankle swelling?

Swelling in the feet and ankles — peripheral edema — is a common side effect caused by amlodipine's vasodilation, which allows fluid to shift into surrounding tissues. It affects some patients more than others and may improve over time.

Can I stop taking Norvasc suddenly?

Amlodipine can generally be stopped without the rebound risks associated with some other blood pressure medications, due to its very long half-life. However, always discuss any medication change with your clinician first.

What side effects might I experience?

Ankle swelling, flushing, headache, dizziness, and fatigue are the most commonly reported effects. These are typically related to the vasodilating properties of calcium channel blockers and often improve after the first few weeks.

Can Norvasc be taken with grapefruit?

Grapefruit and grapefruit juice can increase amlodipine blood levels slightly, though the interaction is less pronounced than with some other calcium channel blockers. Consistent grapefruit intake is more of a concern than occasional use.
