What is Nizoral Psoriasis shampoo (Rx strength)?

Prescription-strength Nizoral Psoriasis is a 2% ketoconazole antifungal shampoo used to treat seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff caused by the yeast Malassezia on the scalp. At prescription concentration, it's more potent than the 1% OTC version and is used for more persistent or severe cases. Ketoconazole works by disrupting the fungal cell membrane, killing the yeast responsible for the flaking, scaling, and scalp irritation. It's typically used twice weekly for a few weeks, then as needed for ongoing control.

Ergosterol synthesis inhibition

Blocks the fungal CYP51 enzyme, disrupting ergosterol production in Malassezia yeast cell membranes—causing membrane instability and fungal cell death directly on the scalp surface.

Higher-concentration antifungal activity

The 2% prescription formulation delivers greater antifungal potency than OTC options, providing more effective control of persistent seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff that hasn't responded to lower-strength treatments.
