Frequently Asked Questions

What causes night sweats?

Common causes include perimenopause and menopause (the most frequent in women), infections, certain medications (antidepressants, hormonal therapies), hyperthyroidism, sleep disorders, anxiety, and — less commonly — lymphoma or other systemic illness. Evaluation identifies the cause.

How do I know if my night sweats need medical attention?

Night sweats significant enough to soak clothing or bedding, associated with unexplained weight loss, fever, fatigue, or swollen lymph nodes warrant clinical evaluation to rule out infection or systemic disease — beyond the more common hormonal causes.

Could my medication be causing my night sweats?

Yes — SSRIs, SNRIs, tamoxifen, certain blood pressure medications, and steroids are among the most common medication-related causes. A medication review is an important early step in evaluation, particularly if night sweats began around the time of a medication change.

What non-hormonal options are available for menopausal night sweats?

Fezolinetant (Veozah) is an FDA-approved non-hormonal option for moderate-to-severe vasomotor symptoms. SSRIs, SNRIs, gabapentin, and clonidine also have supporting evidence. These are appropriate for women who cannot or prefer not to use hormone therapy.

What side effects are associated with night sweat treatments?

HRT may cause breast tenderness and bloating. Fezolinetant requires liver function monitoring. SSRIs and SNRIs may cause GI symptoms and sexual side effects. Clonidine can cause low blood pressure and drowsiness. Treatment is matched to the underlying cause and individual health history. Night Sweats visit What to expect from a Night Sweats visit
