What is Neurontin (Gabapentin)?

Neurontin is a medication originally developed as an anticonvulsant but now widely prescribed for nerve pain conditions including postherpetic neuralgia and diabetic neuropathy. It works by calming overactive electrical signals in the nervous system that cause seizures or the chronic burning, shooting, and tingling sensations associated with nerve damage. It's also used off-label for anxiety, restless legs syndrome, and fibromyalgia. Neurontin is typically taken two to three times daily, with doses gradually increased to find the right therapeutic level.

Calcium channel binding

Attaches to voltage-gated calcium channels in nerve cells, reducing the release of excitatory neurotransmitters that cause abnormal nerve firing, pain signaling, and seizure activity.

Broad nerve pain coverage

Effective for multiple types of neuropathic pain—including shingles-related nerve pain, diabetic neuropathy, and other conditions where damaged nerves misfire and cause chronic discomfort.

Gradual dose titration

Started at a low dose and increased over time to minimize side effects like dizziness and drowsiness while finding the dose that provides the best symptom control.

Frequently Asked Questions

What conditions is Neurontin prescribed for?

Neurontin is FDA-approved for postherpetic neuralgia and certain epilepsy types. It's also widely prescribed off-label for diabetic neuropathy, fibromyalgia, restless legs syndrome, and anxiety, among other conditions.

How long does it take to work?

For nerve pain, improvement is often noticed within 1–2 weeks, though full benefit may take longer. For epilepsy, the dose is built up gradually and effectiveness is assessed over several weeks.

Why is the dose increased slowly?

Gabapentin is started low and increased gradually to minimize dizziness and drowsiness. Slow titration allows the body to adjust and helps identify the lowest dose that provides adequate symptom relief.

What side effects might I experience?

Dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, and swelling in the hands or feet are most common. Coordination problems can occur at higher doses — these effects are often most noticeable when starting or increasing the dose.

Is gabapentin a controlled substance?

Gabapentin is not federally controlled but is classified as controlled in some states due to misuse potential. Your clinician and pharmacist can advise on the specific regulations that apply in your area.
