What is Neupro (Rotigotine)?

Neupro is a transdermal patch delivering rotigotine—a dopamine agonist—continuously through the skin over 24 hours. It's used to treat Parkinson's disease and moderate-to-severe restless legs syndrome (RLS). For Parkinson's, it helps compensate for the loss of dopamine-producing neurons by stimulating the dopamine receptors those neurons would normally activate. For RLS, it reduces the uncomfortable urge-to-move sensations in the legs that disrupt rest and sleep. The patch is applied once daily to a different skin site each day, providing stable, consistent drug delivery without the peaks and troughs of oral dosing.

Continuous dopamine receptor stimulation

Rotigotine activates D2, D3, and D1 dopamine receptors continuously through transdermal delivery, compensating for reduced dopamine signaling in Parkinson's disease and modulating the spinal pathways implicated in restless legs syndrome.

Steady-state transdermal delivery

Unlike oral dopaminergic medications that create fluctuating drug levels, the patch provides smooth, consistent 24-hour drug exposure—reducing the on-off motor fluctuations that can develop with oral Parkinson's treatments.

Once-daily patch convenience

A single patch applied each morning delivers medication around the clock without the need for multiple daily doses—improving adherence and providing consistent symptom control throughout the day and overnight.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply the Neupro patch correctly?

Apply to clean, dry, intact skin on the shoulder, upper arm, abdomen, thigh, or hip. Rotate application sites daily. Press firmly for 30 seconds to ensure full adhesion and avoid the same site for 14 days.

How long before Neupro improves Parkinson's or RLS symptoms?

For restless legs syndrome, improvement may be noticed within the first week. For Parkinson's disease, meaningful benefit develops over several weeks as the dose is gradually increased to the optimal level.

What happens if the patch falls off?

Apply a new patch to a different site for the remainder of that day's wear period. Continue on the original schedule the following day. Never apply two patches at the same time to compensate.

What side effects might I experience?

Application site reactions — redness, itching, and irritation — are the most common. Nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, and in some cases sudden onset of sleep (sleep attacks) can occur, particularly when driving.

Can Neupro cause compulsive behaviors?

Yes. Dopamine agonists including rotigotine have been associated with impulse control disorders — including compulsive gambling, eating, or spending. Report any unusual behavioral changes to your clinician promptly.
