Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most common causes of nausea?

Nausea has a wide range of causes — gastroenteritis, pregnancy, motion sickness, medication side effects, gastroparesis, vestibular disorders, anxiety, migraines, and GI conditions among the most common. The duration, triggers, associated symptoms, and timing relative to meals help identify the cause.

When should nausea be evaluated by a clinician?

Persistent nausea lasting more than a few days without an obvious cause, nausea with significant weight loss, blood in vomit, severe pain, or neurological symptoms warrants evaluation. Nausea during early pregnancy is expected, but severe or persistent cases (hyperemesis gravidarum) require treatment.

Are there lifestyle strategies that help with nausea?

Eating small, frequent, bland meals — avoiding fatty, spicy, or strong-smelling foods — staying hydrated with small sips, avoiding lying flat immediately after eating, and minimizing motion or screen exposure can reduce nausea in many situations.

Could my medication be causing nausea?

Yes — many medications including metformin, antibiotics, NSAIDs, opioids, and certain antidepressants commonly cause nausea, particularly when first started or taken without food. A medication review is an important step when nausea is new or worsening.

What side effects are associated with anti-nausea treatments?

Ondansetron is well tolerated — headache and mild constipation are the most common effects. Promethazine and metoclopramide may cause sedation and carry a risk of movement disorders with prolonged use. Antihistamines cause drowsiness. Ginger supplements are very well tolerated as an adjunct. Nausea visit What to expect from a Nausea visit
