What is Natroba (spinosad)?

Natroba is a prescription topical suspension used to treat head lice infestations in patients 6 months of age and older. It contains spinosad, a naturally derived insecticide produced by a soil bacterium, that kills lice through a mechanism distinct from older pediculicides. A key advantage is that a single 10-minute application is typically sufficient to treat an infestation—and nit combing is not required after treatment, which is a significant practical benefit. It's applied to dry hair and scalp, left on for 10 minutes, then rinsed off. A second treatment may be needed if live lice are seen 7 days after the first.

Neuronal excitation and louse death

Spinosad activates nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in lice neurons in a unique way, causing continuous nerve firing, paralysis, and death of both adult lice and nymphs without significant human toxicity.

Ovicidal activity

Unlike some older lice treatments that kill only adult lice and require repeat applications to catch newly hatched nymphs, Spinosad also kills lice eggs—often allowing a single treatment to clear the infestation completely.

No-nit-comb convenience

Because Spinosad kills eggs as well as live lice, manual nit removal is not required after treatment—a significant practical advantage over pyrethrin and permethrin-based treatments that require time-consuming nit combing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is one treatment of Natroba usually enough for head lice?

Yes — a single 10-minute application clears lice infestations in most people. A second treatment 7 days later may be needed only if live lice are still visible after the first application.

Does Natroba kill lice eggs as well as adult lice?

Yes. Unlike some older lice treatments that only kill adult lice and require repeat applications to catch newly hatching nymphs, Natroba is ovicidal — killing both live lice and their eggs in a single application.

Do I need to do nit combing after using Natroba?

No. Because Natroba kills eggs as well as live lice, time-consuming nit combing is not required after treatment — a significant practical advantage over pediculicides that are not ovicidal.

What side effects might I experience?

Application site redness, irritation, and eye redness if the product contacts the eyes are the most commonly reported effects. Keep Natroba away from the eyes — rinse thoroughly with water if contact occurs.

Should household contacts be treated as well?

Household members and close contacts should be checked for lice and treated if live lice are found. Treating only confirmed cases rather than prophylactically treating everyone is the generally recommended approach.
