What is Nasonex (mometasone) Nasal Spray?

Nasonex is a prescription intranasal corticosteroid used to treat the nasal symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis—including congestion, runny nose, sneezing, and nasal itching. It's also approved to treat nasal polyps in adults. Mometasone works locally in the nasal passages to reduce the inflammation driven by allergic exposure to pollens, dust mites, pet dander, and mold. It's used as one or two sprays in each nostril once daily and typically requires several days of consistent use before full symptom relief is achieved. Systemic absorption is minimal, keeping side effects low.

Intranasal corticosteroid activity

Suppresses the local inflammatory cascade in nasal tissue—reducing mast cell activity, eosinophil infiltration, and cytokine release triggered by allergen exposure—providing comprehensive relief of both early and late-phase allergic rhinitis symptoms.

Full symptom coverage

Addresses the complete spectrum of allergic rhinitis symptoms including nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, and itching—more comprehensive than antihistamines alone, which have limited effect on nasal congestion.

Minimal systemic absorption

Mometasone has very low bioavailability after intranasal administration, with most of the dose remaining active locally in the nasal mucosa—delivering effective anti-inflammatory control with negligible systemic corticosteroid exposure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long before Nasonex relieves my allergy symptoms?

Some symptom improvement may be noticed within 1–2 days, but the full anti-inflammatory benefit of Nasonex typically takes several days to a week of consistent once-daily use to fully develop.

Do I need to use Nasonex every day or only when symptoms are bad?

Daily use provides better and more consistent relief than as-needed use. Regular use maintains anti-inflammatory levels in nasal tissue — stopping and starting allows inflammation to return between doses.

Can Nasonex treat nasal polyps?

Yes — Nasonex is specifically FDA-approved for nasal polyps in addition to seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis. This approval distinguishes it from many other nasal steroids that are only indicated for rhinitis.

What side effects might I experience?

Nasal irritation, nosebleeds, headache, and sore throat are most commonly reported. Because systemic absorption of mometasone is very low, systemic corticosteroid side effects are uncommon with standard nasal dosing.

Is Nasonex safe for long-term use?

Yes. Mometasone's very low systemic absorption makes it suitable for long-term daily use in chronic rhinitis and polyp management without the systemic steroid concerns associated with oral corticosteroids.
