What is Narcan?

Narcan is a fast-acting nasal spray containing naloxone, an opioid antagonist that rapidly reverses life-threatening opioid overdoses. When opioids suppress breathing to dangerous levels, Narcan blocks opioid receptors in the brain, immediately displacing the opioid and restoring normal breathing within minutes. It's available without a prescription and is designed for use by bystanders, family members, and first responders. Because many opioids—including fentanyl—are more potent and longer-lasting than naloxone, multiple doses and emergency medical care are always required after use. It saves lives by providing critical time until emergency responders arrive.

Competitive opioid receptor blockade

Naloxone binds with very high affinity to mu, delta, and kappa opioid receptors, rapidly displacing opioids and blocking their effects—reversing respiratory depression, sedation, and loss of consciousness within 2–5 minutes of administration.

Intranasal absorption speed

Delivered as a fine mist into the nasal cavity, Naloxone is rapidly absorbed through the nasal mucosa into the bloodstream—providing a needle-free route of administration that is fast enough for emergency overdose reversal and safe for untrained bystanders to use.

Temporary reversal requiring follow-up

Naloxone's effect lasts only 30–90 minutes—shorter than many opioids including fentanyl—meaning the overdose can return after the naloxone wears off. Additional doses and immediate emergency medical care are always necessary after administration.
