Frequently Asked Questions

What causes ridges on fingernails?

Vertical nail ridges running from base to tip are common and normal — they become more pronounced with age and reflect minor variations in nail matrix activity. Horizontal ridges (Beau's lines) crossing the nail are more clinically significant — reflecting a past period of disrupted nail growth from illness, nutritional deficiency, or significant physical stress.

When do nail ridges require medical evaluation?

Horizontal ridges on multiple nails — particularly appearing simultaneously — warrant evaluation for the systemic trigger. Accompanied changes including nail color change, pitting, separation from the nail bed, or significant brittleness, especially alongside skin or joint symptoms, may suggest psoriasis, alopecia areata, or nutritional deficiency.

Could nail ridges indicate a nutritional deficiency?

Vertical ridging alone is not a reliable indicator of deficiency. However, brittle, ridged nails in the context of other symptoms may reflect iron deficiency anemia, protein deficiency, or biotin deficiency. Testing is appropriate when deficiency is clinically suspected based on the full picture rather than nail appearance alone.

Is there anything I can do to improve the appearance of nail ridges?

Keeping nails well moisturized — applying cuticle oil and hand cream regularly — minimizes the appearance of vertical ridges. Buffing the nail surface (gently) can temporarily smooth ridges cosmetically. Treating underlying conditions when identified is the most effective approach for pathological ridging.

What side effects are associated with nail ridge treatments?

Moisturizing and gentle buffing carry no side effects. Biotin supplementation — though widely used — has limited evidence for nail improvement in people without deficiency; it is very safe at standard doses but interferes with some thyroid and cardiac biomarker lab tests. Treating identified deficiencies is safe at appropriate doses. Nail Ridges visit What to expect from a Nail Ridges visit
