What is Mupirocin (Bactroban)?

Mupirocin is a topical antibiotic ointment or cream prescribed to treat bacterial skin infections—most commonly impetigo, a highly contagious skin infection caused by staph or strep bacteria. It's also used to eliminate nasal colonization of MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) in patients or healthcare workers identified as carriers. Mupirocin works through a unique mechanism that differs from most other antibiotics, making it effective even against some resistant strains. It's applied directly to affected skin or inside the nostrils two to three times daily.

Isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase inhibition

Blocks a bacterial enzyme essential for protein synthesis that has no equivalent in human cells—stopping bacterial growth through a mechanism unique among topical antibiotics and unaffected by common resistance pathways.

MRSA-active

Effective against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), making it one of the few topical options for decolonization of resistant staph from nasal passages in carriers.

Targeted surface treatment

Applied directly to infected skin or nasal tissue, Mupirocin delivers high local antibiotic concentrations with minimal systemic absorption—keeping side effects low while concentrating the treatment where the bacteria live.

Frequently Asked Questions

What infections is Bactroban used for?

Bactroban is used for impetigo, minor skin infections caused by staph or strep bacteria, and for nasal decolonization of MRSA — a form of antibiotic-resistant staph identified in carriers.

How long is a typical treatment course?

For skin infections, it's typically applied three times daily for 5–10 days. For nasal MRSA decolonization, it's applied inside both nostrils twice daily for 5 days. Follow your clinician's specific instructions.

Should I cover the treated area?

For skin infections, a bandage or gauze can be applied over treated areas — particularly for impetigo, which is highly contagious. Your clinician will advise on the appropriate wound care approach.

What side effects might I experience?

Local burning, stinging, and itching at the application site are most common. These are typically mild. Allergic reactions are rare but should be reported to your clinician if they occur.

Is Bactroban the same as an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment?

No. Mupirocin works through a different mechanism than OTC antibiotic ointments like Neosporin and is significantly more effective against staph infections — including strains resistant to other topical antibiotics.
