What is Moxeza (moxifloxacin) Ophthalmic?

Moxeza is a prescription antibiotic eye drop containing moxifloxacin, a fourth-generation fluoroquinolone, used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis. It's formulated for twice-daily dosing—less frequent than most other antibiotic eye drops—due to its prolonged ocular retention and high bactericidal activity. Moxifloxacin kills bacteria by simultaneously blocking two enzymes required for bacterial DNA replication and repair, making it difficult for resistant strains to emerge. It's applied directly to the infected eye and typically resolves bacterial conjunctivitis within a week.

Dual topoisomerase inhibition

Simultaneously blocks DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV—the two bacterial enzymes needed for DNA replication—creating a high barrier to resistance by requiring two simultaneous mutations for bacteria to survive treatment.

Fourth-generation broad spectrum

Enhanced activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria responsible for ocular infections, including strains resistant to older fluoroquinolone antibiotics—providing reliable coverage for bacterial conjunctivitis.

Twice-daily dosing convenience

Moxeza's formulation maintains high intraocular drug levels with just two daily applications, reducing dosing frequency compared to other antibiotic eye drops and improving adherence during the treatment course.

Frequently Asked Questions

What eye condition does Moxeza treat?

Moxeza is a prescription antibiotic eye drop used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis — bacterial pink eye. It provides broad-spectrum fourth-generation fluoroquinolone coverage against the bacteria most commonly causing eye infections.

How is Moxeza's dosing different from other antibiotic eye drops?

Moxeza is specifically formulated for twice-daily dosing — less frequent than most antibiotic eye drops which require 3–4 daily applications. This simpler schedule supports better adherence throughout the treatment course.

How quickly does Moxeza clear a bacterial eye infection?

Most bacterial conjunctivitis infections begin responding within 1–2 days. The full course — typically 7 days — should be completed even when the eye appears cleared, to prevent recurrence.

What side effects might I experience?

Temporary eye irritation, burning, or stinging immediately after instillation are common. Brief blurred vision can occur after application. These effects are typically mild and resolve quickly — contact your clinician if symptoms worsen.

Can I wear contact lenses while using Moxeza?

Avoid contact lenses during the course of treatment. Bacterial conjunctivitis itself requires contact lens avoidance, and the medication should reach the eye surface without interference from lens material.
