Frequently Asked Questions

What is molluscum contagiosum and who gets it?

Molluscum contagiosum is a viral skin infection caused by a poxvirus — producing small, smooth, dome-shaped papules with a central dimple. It affects children (spread through skin contact and fomites), sexually active adults (spread through genital contact), and immunocompromised individuals who may develop extensive disease.

Will molluscum go away without treatment?

In immunocompetent children and adults, molluscum typically resolves spontaneously within 6–18 months as the immune system clears the infection. Treatment is primarily considered when lesions are numerous, symptomatic, cosmetically concerning, or in locations that risk autoinoculation or transmission to partners.

Is molluscum contagious and how do I prevent spreading it?

Yes — molluscum spreads through direct skin contact and shared towels, clothing, and pool equipment. Avoid sharing personal items, cover lesions when possible, and avoid touching or scratching lesions (which causes autoinoculation and spread to adjacent skin). Sexual transmission in adults is common when genital lesions are present.

What treatment options are available for molluscum?

Options include cantharidin (applied in office — causes blistering to destroy lesions), cryotherapy, curettage, and topical agents including imiquimod, tretinoin, and potassium hydroxide. No single treatment is clearly superior — choice depends on lesion location, number, patient age, and tolerance for discomfort.

What side effects are associated with molluscum treatments?

Cantharidin causes blistering and temporary pain — expected as part of the treatment mechanism. Cryotherapy causes temporary discomfort and may leave temporary pigmentation changes. Imiquimod and KOH cause local inflammation and irritation. Curettage requires anesthesia and causes brief discomfort. All methods may leave minor temporary marks.
