What is Millipred (Prednisolone)?

Millipred is an oral corticosteroid containing prednisolone, used to reduce inflammation and suppress immune overactivity across a wide range of conditions—including asthma flares, allergic reactions, inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatologic conditions, and certain autoimmune disorders. Prednisolone is the active form of prednisone, meaning the body doesn't need to convert it—making it particularly useful for patients with liver conditions who may not convert prednisone efficiently. It's available as a tablet and liquid, taken once or multiple times daily depending on the condition, and tapered gradually rather than stopped abruptly.

Active corticosteroid form

Unlike prednisone, which requires liver conversion, Prednisolone is already in its active form—providing more reliable and consistent anti-inflammatory activity, particularly in patients with impaired liver function.

Broad immune and inflammatory suppression

Inhibits the production of prostaglandins, cytokines, and inflammatory mediators throughout the body, rapidly reducing swelling, pain, and immune-driven tissue damage across virtually any organ system.

Flexible dosing and formulations

Available in multiple strengths and as a liquid for patients who can't swallow tablets—with dosing tailored to condition severity and typically tapered gradually to allow the adrenal glands to resume normal cortisol production.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Millipred different from prednisone?

Prednisolone is already in its active form — the liver doesn't need to convert it, as it does with prednisone. This makes Millipred more reliably effective, particularly for people with liver conditions that impair that conversion.

How quickly does Millipred work?

Prednisolone typically begins reducing inflammation and allergic symptoms within 1–4 hours of the first dose, making it useful for acute conditions where rapid relief is needed.

How do I taper off Millipred safely?

For short courses of a week or less, stopping abruptly is generally safe. For longer courses, the dose should be reduced gradually to allow the adrenal glands to resume normal cortisol production — your clinician will provide a taper schedule.

What side effects might I experience?

Increased appetite, mood changes, difficulty sleeping, fluid retention, and elevated blood sugar are common with short courses. Long-term or high-dose use adds risks of bone density loss, immune suppression, and adrenal suppression.

Can Millipred be taken during pregnancy?

Prednisolone is sometimes used during pregnancy when the benefits outweigh the risks — it's preferred over prednisone because less crosses the placenta. Always discuss use during pregnancy carefully with your clinician.
