What is Metoclopramide?

Metoclopramide is a prokinetic medication that speeds up the movement of food through the stomach and into the small intestine. It's prescribed for gastroparesis—a condition where the stomach empties too slowly, causing nausea, vomiting, and bloating—and for GERD when other treatments haven't worked. It works by blocking dopamine receptors in the gut and brain, which enhances the coordinated muscle contractions that push food forward through the digestive tract. It's also used short-term to treat nausea and vomiting. Long-term use carries a risk of movement side effects, so it's generally prescribed for the shortest effective duration.

Dopamine receptor blockade

Blocks dopamine D2 receptors in the gastrointestinal tract and the brain's chemoreceptor trigger zone, both accelerating stomach emptying and suppressing the nausea and vomiting reflex simultaneously.

Gastric motility enhancement

Strengthens and coordinates the muscle contractions of the stomach and upper intestine, allowing food to move through the digestive system more efficiently and relieving the fullness, bloating, and reflux caused by delayed emptying.

Nausea and vomiting control

Its dual action in the gut and the brain's vomiting center makes Metoclopramide effective for both the motility problems that cause symptoms and the nausea that results from them—addressing cause and symptom together.
