What is Menest (Esterified estrogens)?

Menest is an oral estrogen medication containing esterified estrogens derived from plant sources, used to treat moderate to severe menopausal symptoms including hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness. It's also used for female hypogonadism, ovarian failure, and in some cases for palliative treatment of certain advanced cancers. Like other systemic estrogen therapies, it restores the estrogen levels that decline during menopause, addressing the hormonal deficiency responsible for vasomotor symptoms. For women with a uterus, a progestin is prescribed alongside it to protect the uterine lining.

Systemic estrogen replacement

Provides esterified estrogens that bind to estrogen receptors throughout the body, restoring the hormonal signaling that regulates temperature control, vaginal tissue health, bone density, and mood stability.

Vasomotor symptom relief

Directly addresses the hypothalamic thermoregulatory dysfunction caused by estrogen decline—reducing the frequency and severity of hot flashes and night sweats that disrupt daily function and sleep quality.

Plant-derived estrogen source

Menest's esterified estrogens are derived from plant-based sources rather than equine sources, offering an alternative estrogen profile for patients who prefer or require a non-equine-derived hormone therapy option.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Menest used for?

Menest is an oral estrogen tablet used to treat moderate to severe menopausal symptoms including hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness. It's also used for female hypogonadism and premature ovarian failure.

How is Menest different from other oral estrogen products?

Menest contains esterified estrogens derived from plant sources — an alternative to the conjugated equine estrogens found in Premarin. The estrogen profile is slightly different, which some patients and clinicians prefer.

Do I need to take a progestin alongside Menest?

If you have a uterus, yes. Estrogen therapy without a progestin increases the risk of endometrial overgrowth and cancer. Your clinician will prescribe an appropriate progestin to use alongside Menest.

What side effects might I experience?

Breast tenderness, bloating, nausea, headache, and irregular spotting are most commonly reported — particularly in the first few months. These often improve as hormone levels stabilize with consistent use.

How long before Menest relieves hot flashes?

Many people notice improvement in hot flashes and night sweats within 2–4 weeks of starting. Full symptom relief typically develops over 4–8 weeks as estrogen levels are restored to therapeutic range.
