Frequently Asked Questions

Why would I be referred to a memory disorder clinic?

Referral is appropriate for evaluation of cognitive changes — memory problems, difficulty with language, planning, or judgment — that may represent mild cognitive impairment or dementia. Memory clinics provide comprehensive neuropsychological testing, imaging, biomarker assessment, and specialist expertise for accurate diagnosis and care planning.

Does a referral for memory evaluation mean I have dementia?

Not at all — many patients evaluated for memory concerns have normal cognition for their age, or age-related changes that don't represent disease. Others have reversible causes — thyroid disease, B12 deficiency, medication effects, depression — that are identified and treated. A thorough evaluation provides clarity and peace of mind regardless of the outcome.

What should I expect during a memory clinic evaluation?

Evaluation includes detailed cognitive testing (neuropsychological assessment taking several hours), medical history review, blood work, and brain imaging (MRI). Some clinics offer cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers or amyloid PET imaging for Alzheimer's disease diagnosis. A family member or caregiver is often invited to provide additional history.

What treatments are available if early dementia is diagnosed?

Cholinesterase inhibitors (donepezil, rivastigmine, galantamine) and memantine modestly slow symptom progression in Alzheimer's disease. Anti-amyloid antibodies (lecanemab, donanemab) are newer disease-modifying therapies available for early Alzheimer's in appropriate candidates. Non-pharmacological approaches — exercise, cognitive engagement, sleep optimization — also support brain health.

Are there risks associated with memory evaluation?

Cognitive testing and blood work carry minimal physical risk. Brain MRI is safe for most patients. Lumbar puncture for CSF biomarkers carries a small risk of post-procedural headache. Amyloid PET involves low-level radiation. The emotional impact of evaluation — including anxiety around potential diagnosis — is a real consideration and is addressed by the clinical team.
