Memantine is a prescription medication used to treat moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease. It works through a different mechanism than cholinesterase inhibitors like donepezil—rather than boosting acetylcholine, it regulates glutamate activity in the brain, which becomes overactive in Alzheimer's and contributes to neuronal damage and cognitive decline.
