Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if what I'm experiencing is a side effect of my medication?

A temporal relationship — symptoms beginning or worsening after starting or increasing a medication — is the primary clue. Cross-referencing your symptoms with the medication's known side effect profile is informative. A clinician can help determine whether the symptom fits the expected pattern and whether it warrants discontinuation or dose adjustment.

Should I stop taking my medication if I think it's causing a side effect?

Do not stop medications abruptly without clinical guidance — particularly antidepressants, antiepileptics, beta-blockers, corticosteroids, and blood pressure medications, which can cause serious rebound effects when stopped suddenly. Contact your clinician to discuss the symptom and appropriate next steps before making any medication change.

Are all medication side effects listed in the package insert likely to happen to me?

Package inserts list all reported adverse events regardless of frequency or causality — including extremely rare events. Common side effects (affecting more than 1 in 100 patients) are meaningfully likely. Rare effects (affecting 1 in 10,000 or less) are worth knowing about but are not reasons to avoid medications with well-established benefits.

Can switching to a different medication in the same class reduce side effects?

Often yes — within most drug classes, individual agents have different side effect profiles. For example, within SSRIs, switching can reduce sexual side effects or GI symptoms. Within beta-blockers, cardioselective agents have less effect on breathing. A medication review with your clinician can identify whether a class switch or within-class alternative is appropriate.

What should I do if I experience a serious or unexpected medication reaction?

Seek emergency care immediately for difficulty breathing, throat swelling, severe rash (particularly blistering or involving mucous membranes), chest pain, or signs of a serious allergic reaction. For less urgent but concerning reactions, contact your clinician promptly — don't wait for a scheduled appointment if symptoms are bothersome or worsening.
