What is Maxalt (rizatriptan)?

Maxalt is a triptan medication taken at the onset of a migraine to stop the attack in progress. It works by activating serotonin receptors in the brain that narrow dilated blood vessels and block the pain signals and inflammatory neuropeptides responsible for migraine symptoms. Maxalt is available as a standard tablet and as an orally disintegrating tablet (Maxalt-MLT) that dissolves on the tongue without water—useful when nausea makes swallowing difficult. It's most effective when taken early in the migraine and is not intended for preventive use.

Serotonin 5-HT1B/1D agonism

Activates serotonin receptors on cranial blood vessels and trigeminal nerve terminals, causing vasoconstriction and blocking the release of inflammatory neuropeptides—interrupting the neurovascular cascade that drives migraine pain.

Fast-dissolving tablet option

The Maxalt-MLT orally disintegrating formulation dissolves on the tongue in seconds without water, making it practical when migraine-associated nausea makes swallowing a standard tablet difficult or unreliable.

Early-use effectiveness

Like all triptans, Maxalt works best when taken at the first sign of a migraine—earlier intervention leads to faster and more complete pain relief before the attack becomes fully established.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to take Maxalt?

Take Maxalt at the very first sign of a migraine for the best results. Waiting until the headache is severe reduces its effectiveness. It treats attacks in progress — it does not prevent future migraines.

What is Maxalt-MLT and how is it different?

Maxalt-MLT is the orally dissolving tablet formulation — it dissolves on the tongue without water, making it particularly useful when migraine nausea makes swallowing a standard tablet difficult or unreliable.

Can I take a second dose if my migraine comes back?

Yes. If the migraine returns after initial relief, a second dose can be taken at least 2 hours after the first. Do not exceed two doses within any 24-hour period.

What side effects might I experience?

Dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, tingling, nausea, and a sensation of pressure or heaviness in the chest, neck, or throat are most common — typically mild and short-lived. These sensations are generally not dangerous.

Is Maxalt safe for people with heart disease?

Triptans cause vasoconstriction and are not recommended for people with certain cardiovascular conditions. A thorough cardiovascular history review is required before prescribing rizatriptan to any patient.
