Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between androgenic alopecia and other types of hair loss?

Androgenic alopecia (male pattern baldness) follows a predictable progression — recession at the temples and thinning at the crown — driven by DHT's effect on genetically susceptible follicles. Other types, like alopecia areata or telogen effluvium, have different patterns and causes requiring distinct evaluation.

Does hair loss treatment actually work?

Yes — when started early. Finasteride and dutasteride block DHT production and stabilize or improve hair density in most men. Minoxidil increases blood flow to follicles and prolongs the growth phase. The sooner treatment begins, the more hair there is to preserve.

Do I need to stay on medication forever to keep my hair?

Yes. Hair loss treatments work only while being used — discontinuing finasteride, dutasteride, or minoxidil typically leads to resumption of hair loss within 6–12 months. This is an important consideration when starting treatment.

How long before I see results?

Most men notice stabilization of hair loss within 3–6 months. Visible regrowth, when it occurs, typically becomes apparent at 6–12 months. Photographs taken at baseline and at intervals are the most reliable way to track treatment response.

What side effects are associated with hair loss treatments?

Finasteride may cause decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, or ejaculatory changes in a small percentage of men — most resolve with discontinuation. Post-finasteride syndrome is reported but controversial. Minoxidil can cause scalp irritation and rarely increased facial hair growth.
