What is Luvox (Fluvoxamine)?

Luvox is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) with FDA approval specifically for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in adults and children. While other SSRIs are also used for OCD off-label, Luvox is one of the few with a primary OCD indication. It works by blocking serotonin reuptake, increasing serotonin availability in the brain—which is believed to reduce the intensity of obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors over time. It also has sigma-1 receptor activity, which may contribute to additional neurological effects. It's taken once daily or in divided doses depending on the total dose prescribed.

Serotonin reuptake inhibition

Blocks the serotonin transporter, increasing serotonergic neurotransmission in brain circuits—including the orbitofrontal-striatal pathways—implicated in the obsessive thought cycles and compulsive behavioral loops of OCD.

Primary OCD indication

Unlike most SSRIs that are approved for depression as their primary indication with OCD as a secondary use, Fluvoxamine was developed and approved specifically for OCD—with a clinical trial database focused on obsessive-compulsive symptom reduction.

Sigma-1 receptor activity

Fluvoxamine has notable affinity for sigma-1 receptors—a pharmacological property not shared by other SSRIs—which may contribute to its efficacy profile and has generated research interest in additional neurological and inflammatory applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Luvox primarily approved for?

Luvox is FDA-approved specifically for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) — in both adults and children aged 8 and older. It's also used for social anxiety disorder and, off-label, for other anxiety conditions.

How is Luvox different from other SSRIs for OCD?

Fluvoxamine was one of the first SSRIs developed specifically for OCD and has a robust clinical evidence base for this indication. Its pharmacological profile — including sigma-1 receptor activity — also distinguishes it from other SSRIs.

How long before Luvox reduces OCD symptoms?

Most people begin noticing a reduction in obsessive thoughts and compulsive urges within 4–6 weeks. Full therapeutic benefit — as with all SSRIs — typically takes 8–12 weeks to develop fully at an effective dose.

What side effects might I experience?

Nausea, drowsiness, insomnia, dry mouth, and sexual dysfunction are the most commonly reported effects. Fluvoxamine has notable CYP enzyme inhibitory effects and interacts with many medications — a thorough review before prescribing is essential.

Can I stop Luvox suddenly?

No. Like all SSRIs, Luvox should be tapered gradually rather than stopped abruptly. Sudden discontinuation can cause withdrawal symptoms including dizziness, nausea, irritability, and flu-like sensations. Always taper under clinician guidance.
