Frequently Asked Questions

Who qualifies for lung cancer screening?

Current USPSTF guidelines recommend annual low-dose CT (LDCT) screening for adults aged 50–80 who have a 20 pack-year smoking history and currently smoke or quit within the past 15 years. Shared decision-making about benefits, limitations, and harms is required before initiating screening.

How is lung cancer screening done?

Low-dose CT of the chest takes less than 10 minutes, requires no contrast or preparation, and exposes patients to a small fraction of the radiation of a standard CT. It detects nodules and other abnormalities that may represent early-stage lung cancer — when treatment is most effective.

What happens if a nodule is found on my screening CT?

Most lung nodules found on screening are benign — the majority are followed with repeat imaging to confirm stability. A nodule's size, density, growth rate, and other features determine the follow-up interval and whether biopsy or further workup is needed. A positive screening result does not mean cancer.

Does lung cancer screening make sense if I've already quit smoking?

Yes — former smokers remain eligible for up to 15 years after quitting, as lung cancer risk remains elevated for years after cessation. Quitting smoking is strongly encouraged at any time — it reduces lung cancer risk and improves overall health outcomes regardless of screening status.

Are there risks associated with lung cancer screening?

The main risks are false positives — findings that trigger additional testing in patients who turn out not to have cancer — and overdiagnosis of slow-growing tumors that may never cause harm. Radiation exposure from annual LDCT is low. Anxiety related to incidental findings is a meaningful patient experience consideration.
