What is Losartan?

Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) used to treat high blood pressure, protect the kidneys in people with Type 2 diabetes, and reduce the risk of stroke in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy. It works by blocking the receptor that angiotensin II—a potent blood vessel constrictor—binds to, allowing blood vessels to relax and reducing the strain on the heart. Unlike ACE inhibitors, Losartan is less likely to cause the dry cough that leads many patients to switch medications. It's taken once daily.

Angiotensin II receptor blockade

Blocks AT1 receptors that angiotensin II binds to, preventing the vasoconstriction, fluid retention, and cardiac stress that this hormone causes—lowering blood pressure through direct vessel relaxation.

Kidney protection in diabetes

Reduces intraglomerular pressure in the kidneys, slowing the progression of diabetic nephropathy and protecting kidney function over time—an important benefit beyond blood pressure control alone.

Cough-free ACE inhibitor alternative

Provides similar cardiovascular and renal protection to ACE inhibitors without blocking the bradykinin pathway that causes the persistent dry cough many patients find intolerable.
