It acts quickly—lowering potassium levels within hours—and can be used for both acute correction and ongoing maintenance to keep potassium in a safe range.

Lokelma's microporous zirconium silicate structure acts as an artificial ion exchanger, selectively capturing potassium ions (as well as ammonium and hydrogen ions) throughout the GI tract—removing them via the stool before absorption into the bloodstream.
